Coupé-Décalé vs Zouglou >>

@Indonesian Music Shop : Keroncong music sometimes mixed with other instruments & beats. The compursari music : combining Kroncong & gamelan music instruments innovated by a senior artist , MR, MANTHOUS of Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, is now very popular.

@Far Side Music : Kroncong music is believed to have originated in the communities of freed Portuguese slaves in the 16th century. European influence from this time can also be heard in the music of the Batak people of North Sumatra, and from the end of the 19th century, the beginnings of guitar accompaniment incorporated within a distinctly Indonesian idiom in music from Sumatra, South Sulawesi and elsewhere.

@Wikipedia : : One ukulele, called the "cak" (pronounced "chak") may be steel-stringed and the instrumentalist strums chords with up to 8 strums per beat in 4/4 rhythm. The off-beat strums are accentuated. The other ukulele, called the "cuk" (pronounced "chook"), is larger and may have 3 gut or nylon strings

@RootsWorld : Although the instruments and the singing style are clearly descended from European origins, the chord progression takes the Western ear by surprise and provides an unsettling, ethereal flavor to the songs. The langgam jawa , a regional variant, has an even more local character with its use of Javanese gamelan scales.

@Paul Vernon : On a slightly more dangerous - or exhilarating - level, sharp young men would wander the streets at night singing of their longing for the young girls of the area. Most reported exchanges (in ancient colonial literature) are innocuous enough, but applying the 'Damn Tinkers' theory, more raunchy verses must surely have been sung.

@Black & White : Kroncong??!! Yes, kroncong has ever been my favourite! When I was the Manager of the quaint little Penang Hill Hotel in the 70's there would be batches of foreign tourists visiting the place. I would without fail change the music to kroncong. So much so, the staff would know of incoming business once the kroncong was played!

@Tempo : : The maestro of keroncong music, Gesang Martohartono, yesterday (29/3) received royalties for his album sales during the period of July to December 2008. From the Rp71 million he received, Rp42 million came from Indonesia.

@Gamelan Padhang Moncar : Waljinah was born into a poor family in Surakarta in 1945, the tenth child in her family. Her father earned a living as an artisan, painting batik cloth, and her mother sold food in the market. It was in the batik factory where her father worked that Waljinah heard the traditional Javanese songs that inspired her to become a singer.
